Pour plus de la moitié d’entre eux ce fut une première.
Les réactions suite à la visite, témoignaient de l’importance de son impact. Le sénateur Yvon Collin déclarait ainsi : « C’était pour moi une première visite sur place au cœur de ce conflit qui focalise tant de passion. Je pensais avoir compris la grande énigme. Au fil des rencontres j’ai ressenti la complexité du problème… si c’était simple cela se saurait… » et le sénateur Robert Hue : « Ma perception du conflit a en effet changé. Elle m’apparaît plus complexe encore ».

Cette délégation a aussi pu découvrir l’aspiration à la paix des deux peuples : « la présence et la volonté d’hommes et de femmes dans les deux pays à la recherche de la paix et du dialogue servent à mes yeux aujourd’hui une donnée particulièrement déterminante » déclarait Robert Hue, alors que le sénateur Michel Bécot affirmait quant à lui : « j’ai senti chez eux un grand désir d’aller vers la Paix, même au prix de certains sacrifices ».

French Senators in Israel and the Palestinian territories

A MedBridge delegation of 11 French senators from different political backgrounds, led by socialist senator Jean-Pierre Plancade, visited the Middle-East from February 4th to 7th 2007 and met with Israeli and Palestinian political leaders.
Half of the delegation had never been to the region before.

At the end of the visit, the senators underlined the impact it has had on their views. Senator Yvon Collin declared: « It was my first visit to this conflict-torn region which has been the focus of so much passion. I thought I had understood the great mystery. Yet, as the trip went on I realized how complex the issue was… »
Senator Robert Hue said: « In fact, my perception of the situation changed. Now I understand it is even more complex. »
The delegation also discovered how much Israelis and Palestinians strive for peace: « The existence and the will of men and women who struggle for peace and dialogue on both sides is very important » asserted Robert Hue. Michel Bécot said “I felt they have a real desire to achieve peace, even at the price of some sacrifices”.
